Talking Points

AFFORDABILITY

● This affordability crisis was created by Donald Trump and his allies in Congress like Mike Lawler.

● After running on an empty promise to lower costs, Mike Lawler’s support of Trump’s tariffs and needless wars has made everything more expensive.

While Mike Lawler repeatedly voted to rubber-stamp Trump’s chaotic tariffs over the past year, American families have paid more than $1,700 in higher costs. New Yorkers are spending $2,000 more a year with Republicans in power. Lawler recently claimed that tariffs would help “reduce overall costs” for Americans.

● Gas, groceries, utilities, healthcare, housing – the cost of everything is out of control.

The Iran war is costing over a trillion dollars that could be spent meeting our needs here.

● Electricity costs in the Hudson Valley are up 14% just this year. They are 25% higher than the national average. (Source: Energy Information Administration and Empire Center for Public Policy)

● Trump and Lawler ran on 2 promises: I will make life more affordable, and no more foreign wars. Neither were true.

HEALTHCARE

● Mike Lawler voted to cut nearly a trillion dollars in critical healthcare funding to give tax breaks to the rich. Now, New York State hospitals are at risk of closure or service cuts.

● New York State predicts that 31,200 people in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess will lose insurance. 1.5 million statewide will lose it. We’ll have 800 fewer nurses. (Highlands Current).

● Trump and Mike Lawler forced 20 million Americans over a “healthcare cliff” on purpose by letting subsidies expire, intentionally hitting hardworking families with a massive tax hike.

Thanks to Republicans gutting healthcare tax credits while hiking premiums – a double punch – health providers in New York will lose an additional $213 million in funding.

So hospitals and clinics will close. Nurses are being fired.

New Yorkers who buy insurance on their own will see dramatic increases:

● The average couple in the Lower Hudson Valley will pay $2,472 more a year in health insurance – a 31% increase. (Associated Press, 1/2/26)

● A 45-year-old in New York making $62,000 will see their average annual premium costs rise by $4,508 to hit $9,948 annually.

● A 60-year-old couple in New York making $82,000 will see their average annual premium costs rise by $12,671 to hit $19,896 annually.

● A family of four in New York making $126,000 will see their average annual premium costs rise by $17,132 to hit $28,352 annually.

● 860,000 New Yorkers will lose their health care coverage entirely thanks to Republican premium increases and the Big Ugly bill.

By slashing Medicaid, driving rural hospitals off a cliff, and ending healthcare tax credits, they’ve created a disaster for working families and helped billionaires get even richer.

WAR

Lawler voted against the War Powers Act that gives Congress control over the U.S. going to war. Despite Trump’s insane threats to make “a whole civilization disappear,” Lawler give him a blank check to commit war crimes and send gas prices over $4 dollars.

● Trump is demanding a $1.5 trillion budget for his military expansion while telling

American families we need to gut important services like Medicare and Medicaid. Just three weeks of the war budget would provide vision, hearing, and dental coverage to every senior on Medicare for a year.

The Iran war is costing hundreds of billions that could be spent meeting our needs here.

TAXES

● Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill permanently cuts taxes for big corporations, increases the estate tax exemption to $15 million, and gives rich heirs a huge tax break, while putting our families and our communities at risk.

TRUMP’S ATTACK ON DEMOCRACY

While Trump hijacks our democracy, Mike Lawler gives him the thumbs up. Lawler voted for warrantless surveillance – that gives the government power to spy on anyone anywhere.

MAGA POLITICS

Lawler’s bogus claims of bi-partisanship are lies from a former political spin doctor. He has a 100% record of voting to support MAGA’s Project 2025 Agenda and has Donald Trump’s “complete and unconditional endorsement.”

See Voting Record below for specific bills.

WHAT KIND OF PERSON IS MIKE LAWLER?

Mike Lawler was a political consultant and lobbyist for the fossil fuel industry before running for Congress.

He called the Epstein Files “a colossal waste of time” and said we should “move on” from the investigation. This from someone who flew to California for Michael Jackson’s child sex abuse trial and was ejected from the courtroom for making loud derogatory remarks about the witnesses.
